The box that refuses to change
The G-Class started life as an off-roader and kept its boxy shape for decades. For the 2019 model year Mercedes-Benz launched an all-new generation, and the shape still looks like it was drawn with a ruler. That's the point.
The numbers
From Mercedes-Benz USA's 2021 G-Class guide:
- 4.0-liter V8 biturbo, 416 hp and 450 lb-ft.
- 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic.
- 0–60 mph in 5.6 seconds.
- Top speed 130 mph, electronically limited.
- Curb weight about 5,556 lb.
Built to climb things
Mercedes lists 4MATIC all-wheel drive with a 40/60 torque split, a low-range gear reduction, and three 100 percent differential locks (front, center and rear). Lock one of them and the car switches into its "G-Mode." It can ford 27.6 inches of water, according to Mercedes. Most of them will ford a car wash.
The one at Lamborghini Miami
This 2021 G 550 is listed at $126,697 as of our check on 21 October 2026. Darin's album doesn't include this model, so the photo on the card is a licensed Wikimedia Commons shot of the same model, not this exact car. The credit is right under the photo.
Why it turns heads
Everybody knows the shape. The door slam sounds like a bank vault. It's the rare luxury car that looks just as right in a snowbank as in front of a steakhouse.
The honest part
